![]() ![]() ![]() Next - probably the biggest tip I can give is where you'll find PWA related tooling - under the Application tab. I'm not using those features yet, but I can see being able to test them in the browser like that as being very helpful. At the time I'm writing this article, it looks like the biggest differences are that Canary lets you test background sync and push which is pretty good. Don't forget you can run both at the same time. While I was testing last time, I found myself going back and forth a bit. (Well, most devs.) That being said, Google Canary is making some improvements to DevTools in the PWA area. Starting Offįirst off - I generally stick to the "mainline" Chrome (released Chrome) as I prefer to use what regular people use. To be clear, this will not cover every aspect of DevTools related to PWAs, but rather focus on what's been helpful to me so far. By reducing the user experience differential between the web app and native apps on the user's device, you reduce both the loss of any muscle memory they have revolving around the native interface of the device and the sensation of "something isn't quite right" that users can experience when switching between native and web-based apps.As this month is apparently "blog everything I can about PWA month", I wanted to share some quick notes on how I'm using DevTools, specifically Chrome (but I'll quickly look at Edge, Firefox, and Safari) to work with and debug progressive web apps (PWAs). The application itself may then manifest as in a chromeless view (without the full browser chrome) but it nevertheless is executing effectively as a tab within the browser.įor users, the experience of a seemingly-native PWA is more comfortable and convenient than a typical website. This makes it simple for a user to use a gesture to access an app by tapping or clicking its icon. ![]() Installed applications are more conveniently invoked as they have a presence in a device's home screen or app list or bar. The option to install a web application is part of the Progressive Web App philosophy-giving web apps the same user experience advantages as native apps so they can be competitive. ![]()
